Gangdong-gu creates safe nighttime crosswalks by installing solar LED traffic signs

- Gangdong-gu to replace LED signs at twelve elementary school zones

- Prevents traffic accidents and creates safe traffic environments for children through nighttime visibility

Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jung hun) will replace twenty-three school zone signs with eco-friendly and solar LED signs.

The district completed replacements of twenty-three traffic safety signs at twelve school zones, including Seoul Gangdeok Elementary School and Gangmyoung Elementary School, that needed better nighttime visibility due to heavy traffic and pedestrians.

The solar LED signs use solar power, a natural energy resource, that collects energy during the day and automatically lights up the signs at night with fixed lighting. This installation supplements the existing signs’ low visibility at night.

Between 2016 and last year, Gangdong-gu installed a total of 103 LED traffic safety signs. The LED signs at school zones is also expected to greatly reduce the number of traffic accidents by allowing drivers to easily notice school zones at night.

A district official commented, “We plan to expand the LED sign replacement project to all school zones after analyzing the project’s effects and residents’ feedback.”

In addition, Gangdong-gu is promoting projects for improving traffic safety equipment, such as △LED floor traffic lights, △yellow carpets, △speed signs, △voice-activated information devices, and △runway-type crosswalks, to create safe school zones for children.
