Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jung Hun) is planning to replace 275 outdated streetlights in the residential areas of Cheonho 1-dong and 3-dong with eco-friendly LED security lights to ensure residents' safety at night.

The main problem of the preexisting sodium security lamps is that their light is spread all over the place, causing light pollution. It is also difficult to distinguish objects or persons under the sodium lamps, which makes the area vulnerable to crimes. In addition, the outdated lights are wastes of energy due to their poor energy efficiency.

To resolve these issues, Gangdong-gu plans to replace all outdated streetlights in Cheonho 1-dong and 3-dong with LED security lights by November.

The cut-off type LED security lights which will be newly installed have outstanding color rendering properties. Clear vision is assured even during nighttime. Since the light only focuses on the roads, it will reduce inconveniences such as sleep disturbance and glare. The power consumption of LED lights is only half of that of sodium lamps; and therefore, Gangdong-gu can achieve their purpose of energy saving.

Mayor Lee Jung Hun stated, “Since LED security lights are effective for reducing light pollution, saving energy and preventing crimes, they are well received by the residents. We will keep replacing all outdated sodium security lights with LEDs to create a safer environment where the residents can walk around safely even at night.”
