Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jung Hun) carried out a volunteer project for making face mask lanyards to protect underprivileged children from COVID-19.

Due to the continuous spread of COVID-19, children are having difficulty in keeping their face masks safe, after face masks became a necessity for all citizens. In particular, face masks have possibilities to be accidentally switched or lost, especially during a group or an outdoor activity. In many cases, they are placed and stored anywhere, in an unsanitary way.

To overcome such problems, Gangdong-gu came with an idea of connecting neck straps to the face masks, resulting as "face mask lanyards". This project also aims to protect children from the pandemic by promoting preventive measures. The project is especially significant, since it was carried out from a volunteer’s idea. The volunteer suggested that we could prevent the children from losing their face masks by connecting a neck strap. Children will now be able to store their masks in a more sanitary way without the concern of losing it.

The project was conducted in two sessions (morning and afternoon) at the Gangdong-gu Volunteer Center on July 15. The volunteers made around 1,000 face mask lanyards this day. For the convenience of the children, elastic strings were used, and adorable accessories were attached to the lanyards considering children’s taste.

All face mask lanyards made this day, including summer face masks for kids, will be distributed to 26 child welfare facilities in Gangdong-gu for the underprivileged children.

Mayor Lee Jung Hun stated, “Although COVID-19 continues spreading nationwide, the volunteers will never stop sharing their love to overcome the difficulty together. Not only does this volunteer project protect children from COVID-19, but also be a good chance in making a happy community.”
