Gangdong-gu Protects Safety of Elder Pedestrians$- Pedestrian safety training & traffic safety supplies distribution to commence from August

07-08-2018

Gangdong-gu, headed by Mayor Lee Jung-hun, will conduct pedestrian safety training and traffic safety supplies distribution as part of an effort to ensure the safety of elder pedestrians.

Forty-four percent of traffic accidents occurring across the district over the past five years involved elders; thus spurring on the commencement of this project to both promote public awareness of the majority of accidents arising from elders walking the streets at night, as well as their safety.

The pedestrian safety training and traffic safety supplies distribution is scheduled to begin from August and will be offered all year round. This project will operate in cooperation with the Seoul Gangdong Police Station to conduct the training sessions and distribution of supplies at district senior citizen centers and other locations where elders gather. Explanations are to be provided while emphasizing the pedestrian and traffic safety rules, as well as a self-diagnosis and plans for safe walking habits during the training. Elders will be urged to attach a reflection badge, reflection sticker, and other supplies to their clothes, shoes and bags, in order to prevent nighttime traffic accidents.

An official remarked, “We will continue to create a safe traffic environment so that we may better secure the safety of susceptible elders.”
