Gangdong-gu held ‘The Worldwide Celebration’ for the 100th birthday of an elderly person who is residing in a city nursing home on Monday, February 20th.

This celebration was the first birthday party held this year as well as since the operation of the nursing home in 2012.

The elderly person who reached 100 years old this day was born in 1917 and was perfectly healthy despite his age. He has resided at the nursing home for 30 years.

Around 60 residents of Gangdong-gu including the head of Gangdong-gu, the elderly at the nursing home and sponsors attended the party. There were nicely prepared food, a performance by a choir formed by a group of Gangdong-gu residents, ‘Petit Cochon’, and a birthday gift (a longevity cane) to give warm and precious memories to the elderly at the nursing home.

The longevity cane that was prepared as the birthday gift symbolizes the long life of an elderly person and it was created by Gangdong-gu to wish for the elderly’s healthy life and longevity.

Gangdong-gu has been working on various projects together with private organizations since 2012 to improve the benefits provided to the elderly in Gangdong-gu. ‘The Worldwide Celebration’ that is held to celebrate the 100th birthday of the elderly is playing a significant role in expressing respect toward the long-lived elderly and instilling the idea of filial duty.

Gangdong-gu celebrated 100th birthdays of 40 elderly men and women who are living with their families and it is also planning to hold more meaningful celebrations for the elderly in Gangdong-gu who reached 100 or older and wish to celebrate their birthdays (58 people as of the end of January).

The Worldwide Celebration is sponsored by Gangdong City Construction Co., Ltd. and Gyeongji Construction.

Gangdong-gu announced that it will provide various tailored benefits for the elderly to be a district where the elderly want to live and where people are happy while paying respect to older generations.
