Subject 'Blueprint' for additional extension of subway line 9 in Gangdong-gu

As the project to build urban railways in Gangdong-Hanam-Namyangju, Seoul, was confirmed, the blue light grew on the Gangdong-gu District's long-cherished project of additional extension of subway line 9.

Gangdong-gu District announced on the 5th that the extension of Gangdong-gu Line 9 was also confirmed as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport included the "Seoul Gangdong-Hanam-Namyang Week Urban Railway Construction" project in the 3rd new city, Namyangju Wangsuk District last December. Construction of the railway construction project began in 2024 and aims to be completed in 2028.

The fourth phase of the project, which is being pursued by Gangdong-gu, is a 4.12km section from the Central Veterans Hospital Station to the Godeokgangil District 1. A bidding process is currently underway to select a turnkey construction company. The four-stage additional extension project will connect the disconnection section of Gangil-dong with 1.25km from Godeokgangil 1 district to Gangil-dong.

In addition, Wangsuk District's measures to improve wide-area transportation will include the establishment of a new Han River bridge to disperse demand for road traffic, the expansion of Olympic Highway (Gangil IC-Seondong IC, Amsa IC-Gangdong IC) and the opening of Gangil IC bypass road. As a result, the road traffic environment in Gangdong-gu is expected to improve.

In June last year, Gangdong-gu signed a memorandum of understanding with Hanam City, Namyangju City and the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) to promote business cooperation for urban railway extension projects and promised mutual cooperation.

Lee Jung hun, head of Gangdong-gu District Office, said, "If Line 9 is extended to Namyangju via Hanam, Gangdong-gu is expected to be reborn as a hub city in the eastern metropolitan area."
