Gangdong-gu Office Set to Wield Robust Measures to Collect Parking Fines in Arrears

- Gangdong-gu Office plans to proceed with an account attachment to those failed to hew to guidelines by the end of February

- To relieve burden of delinquents, defaulted fines can be paid in installments in light of current economic hardship

Gangdong-gu Office (head: Lee Soo-hee) has pledged to roundly collect fines for parking violations from delinquents by sending out notices informing an attachment of a bank account if it’s not paid in time.

Gangdong-gu Office this year has newly expanded its scope of violators subject to an account attachment who failed to pay ₩200,000 ($154) or more from an existing defaulters falling into arrears of ₩500,000 or more. In line with such scope expansion, Gangdong-gu Office has already sent out the notices to some additional 1,400 delinquents who have been excluded from the attachment.

Defaulters subject to attachment of an account have been ordered to pay fines in arrears by Feb. 28. Gangdong-gu Office added that it is planning to alleviate burdens of defaulters by allowing them to pay fines in installments in light of current economic hardship prompted by recent interest rate hikes and rising prices.

Many look forward to creating perception changes toward the gravity of fines as well as strengthening fundamental order like eradicating illegal parking habits in the district by the office’s swift and intensive administrative measures coping with fines in arrears. For good measure, the office is set to use collected fines in arrears in beefing up traffic infrastructure in the district by improving parking environment such as rearranging additional parking lots and implementing projects related to shared parking.

“Apart from other types of fine, there are a great deal of small amount of fines in arrears,” said Hwang Chang-sun, head of the Parking Administration Division at Gangdong-gu Office. “We will induce delinquents to pay fines on their own accord by sending them periodical notices informing fines not paid and potential account attachment if it is not paid in time. We will do our best to manage parking fine default issues by sending notices quickly even through text messages and collect fines earliest as possible.”
