Gangdong-gu Office (head: Lee Soo-hee) has been awarded for its flagship bike rack product as one of the winners in the environments category at the Good Design Award 2022 held in the United States.

Founded in Chicago in 1950, the Good Design Awards is the internationally recognized open contest for design. Celebrating its 72nd anniversary this year, the annual contest – co-chaired by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies – recognizes winners in various award categories such as electronics, transportation, furniture, and hardware.

Gangdong-gu Office’s recognized product is called ‘Align’, a bike rack combined with personal mobility devices. The product’s design is inspired by the pre-history com-pattern pottery, which is one of the main relics taken care of in the district’s Amsa History Park.

Even though the number of shared personal mobility like bikes and e-scooters has increased rapidly, the problem of reckless parking has emerged as new social problems which are threatening the walking environment. In order to resolve the problem, Gangdong-gu Office has developed a shared rack that allows riders to park various personal mobility devices – regardless of type and size, e.g., children’s bikes, e-scooters, and mountain terrain bikes – in a single type rack.

This specially made rack is currently installed in nooks and crannies of the district, allowing users to park their bikes or e-scooters more conveniently and creating walking environment more safe and pleasant.

“It is truly an honor to be awarded in this internationally recognized design contest. The dignity of any district or region can be felt even with a small public facility,” said Lee Soo-hee, head of Gangdong-gu Office. “We are planning to manage our district more attentively so that people can take pride in public facilities and sceneries.”

In the meantime, Gangdong-gu Office is mulling a medium-and long-term plan called ‘Gangdong: The Grand Design’ in an effort to boost the district’s image with distinct features and attractions. It is set to implement various district design enhancing projects through the development of attracting locations to enjoy night scenery, district-oriented public design, and other businesses related to improving scenery that could highlight the district’s identity.
