Gangdong-gu kicks off the effort to create a safe pedestrian environment for children

- Installed speed cameras in eight school zones to strengthen the safety of vulnerable road users

- Plan to install more cameras in three school zones in the second half of this year

Gangdong-gu (head: Lee Soo-hee) announced on the 21st that the district installed eight speed cameras in school zones near seven elementary schools including Gangdong Elementary School to ensure a safe pedestrian environment for children.

To select the location to install speed cameras, the district office chose candidate locations where the installation is required considering the newly designated school zones. It selected final eight locations after consultations and site investigations with Seoul Metropolitan Government, Gangdong Police Station, and Seoul Metropolitan Police.

The eight locations include seven school zones including Gangdong Elementary School. Gangdong-gu plans to commence the operation of speed cameras in the first half of 2023 after completing the tests on electricity and communication network, acceptance inspection by Korea Road Traffic Authority, and other matters required for the operation of speed cameras.

So far, Gangdong-gu installed a total of 55 speed cameras within school zones, starting with 27 school zones in 2020. It intends to install more speed cameras to three school zones and one silver zone in the second half of this year.

Yun Hee-eun, Director of Traffic Administration Division, said, “We will work hard in various ways to create a safe environment where children and other vulnerable road users can walk the street safely.”
