Gangdong-gu records the highest fertility rate among autonomous districts in Seoul for 2021

- A meaningful result as low birth rate and aging population are considered as critical social issues

- Proactive policies to support child birth and nurturing serve as a reason to become no. 1 district in Seoul

According to 2021 birth statistics released by Statistics Korea on the 24th, Gangdong-gu (Head: Lee Soo-hee) recorded the highest birth rate among 25 autonomous districts in Seoul with a total fertility rate (TFR) of 0.797. Holding the no. 1 position is all the more meaningful considering that the low birth rate and aging population have become critical social issues recently.

Gangdong-gu was ranked no. 2 in terms of the TFR in 2020, and the reason behind to record such high birth rate was the increasing population and proactive policies to support child birth and nurturing.

For instance, Gangdong-gu provides a series of financial support packages for households with children such as special subsidy for childbirth, which is the first among districts of Seoul, and childcare subsidies for school admission to reduce their financial burdens. In addition, Gangdong-gu provides iMOM Taxi service to enhance the mobility of pregnant women and families with infants and toddlers via a dedicated app. Likewise, the district implements various resident-centered policies.

Gangdong-gu plans to continue to provide various programs to benefit its residents in consideration of diverse types of families such as temporal provision of child care subsidies and win-win project for multi-child families.

Lee Soo-hee, Head of Gangdong-gu Office, said, “Recording the highest TFT is a critical indicator to remind us of the importance of policies to support child birth and nurturing. Although we became the no. 1 in the total birth rate, we are aware of the seriousness of the low birth rate. In the future, Gangdong-gu will strive to expand child birth support policies to increase the birth rate and provide more support for child care and nurturing.”
