The women-friendly city of Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jung-hun) substantially operates the Gangdong-gu Family Counseling Center (2F, 4, Yangjae-daero 138-gil, Gangdong-gu, Seoul) to offer treatment for those who need family counseling.

The center, which was established by use of the district’s budget of 2018, offers more than 1,300 cases of counseling each year, protects victims of domestic violence, and guides to protective facilities as well as temporary protection.

Safety equipments were installed in counseling offices for residents who are hesitant to visit the center due to COVID-19 and the center holds therapy programs for victims and attackers, as well as programs for prevention of domestic violence.

 The center is open from 10 AM to 5 PM. on the weekdays, and any resident who needs help can visit the center, free of cost.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated, “Countless women are exposed to danger in their homes where they should feel safest, and cases of domestic violence are increasing due to rising economic and social pressures and fear” through a public statementinApril2020.

According to the survey on domestic violence conducted by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, only a mere 1.0 percent of those that experienced violence has asked others for help.

Mayor Lee Jung-hun stated, “Domestic violence severely hurts other family members as well, and not just the victims. If there is anyone around you suffering from violence, please refer them to the Gangdong-gu Family Counseling Center. The center willprovideprotectionand counseling for residents hurt by domestic violence and will help attackers change their perceptions. Gangdong-gu will do its best to help residents during difficulties to create a happy Gangdong.”
