Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jung Hun) published newsletters in braille for residents with visual impairments as a means of satisfying their right to know and improving information accessibility for the visually impaired, in addition to solving the gap in information sharing among residents.

The 60-page braille newsletters are packed with information that proves useful for the visually impaired regarding welfare services, education, administrative news, tourist attractions, and health. The first 40 pages are written in braille for the visually impaired, and the following 20 pages are composed of a silent letter for the disabled and non-disabled to understand and communicate with each other.

250 newsletters will be published four times a year, and the visually impaired who wish to subscribe to the newsletter can receive the newsletter by mail. The newsletters will be displayed at community service centers, welfare centers for the disabled, welfare centers for the visually disabled, and libraries for more disabled individuals to take interest in administrative matters.

Mayor Lee Jung Hun stated, “The disabled are at the center of our policies for creating a society with no discrimination. There are about 1,800 visually impaired residents in Gangdong-gu, and we hope that the braille newsletters will solve the inequality of information sharing for the disabled in addition to being the starting point for realizing a kind welfare where all residents live together in harmony.”
