Leading future growth by combining “smart innovation” and “convergent development”$-Gangdong-gu conducts reorganization to establish infrastructure for 550,000 residents in 2024-- Smart City TF and teams for future growth strategy and rivers created to narrow regional and class gaps and make Gangdong happy together by looking at people's lives from various angles

Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jung-hun) has announced that it will carry out reorganization highlighting "smart" and "convergence." Gangdong-gu is considered a region that will experience the greatest changes in Seoul over the next five years because of massive reconstruction projects, the creation of Go-Deok biz valley and the extension the subway.

The latest organizational restructuring appears aimed at responding to the rapidly changing administrative environment and taking the lead in the age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In particular, the expansion of the "Smart City TF" and the creation of a "future growth strategy team" and a "river team" are noticeable.

First, the existing Electronics Information Division will be expanded and changed to be a "Smart City TF" under the direct control of the deputy mayor. The Electronics Information Division, which had belonged to the Administration & Safety Bureau, will be under the deputy mayor to build systems for fast decision-making and business processes, and a Big Data team will be created to lay the groundwork for the smart city.

Furthermore, a mid- and long-term road map for the creation of a smart city ecosystem is in the making to resolve urban problems and improve the quality of people's lives by applying cutting-edge information and communication technologies like Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial engineering (AI) to urban regeneration, traffic improvement and energy conservation.

Second, a "future growth strategy team" will be created within the Urban Planning Division. Gangdong-gu, which marks its 40th anniversary this year, plans to rebuild its decrepit headquarter building and expand welfare facilities.

The team will play a bigger role in creating a "Gangdong that will take off and become happy together" by overcoming the limitations of a local government like limited space and budget constraints through convergent development and the exploration of new strategic projects.

Gangdong-gu said it would develop the upcoming headquarter building as a complex facility in cooperation with Seoul City and related agencies such as SH and LH and actively attract strategic projects that would be of help to the future of Gangdong-gu from among projects pushed by the central government.

Third, a "river team" will be created within the Flood Control Division to build resident-friendly "waterways." Recently, large-scale apartment and business complexes have been built along Godeok-cheon and Mangwol-cheon and more residents have been enjoying leisure time near the streams.

So Gangdong-gu plans to carry out a project to return waterways to citizens by improving their water quality and creating a "river team" that will be exclusively in charge of bicycle lanes and sports facilities.

"The biggest worry of a local government would be how it could narrow the regional and class gaps with limited resources. Gangdong-gu intends to find a clue to the problem from 'smart innovation' and 'convergent development.' We will strive to offer an answer to other local governments by setting an example through organizational restructuring." Gangdong-gu Mayor Lee Jung-hun said.
