Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jung-hun) held, on the 18th, a briefing regarding the launch of a project called Formulation of an Urban Management Plan for the Revitalization of the Functions of Areas Near Subway Stations in order to fulfill the pledge made in the 7th popular elections called the Sensible Development of Important Areas Around Subways.

The briefing was attended by Lee Jung-hun, mayor of Gangdong-gu Office; Kim Hyeong-jun, the director of the Public Development Business Department of the Seoul Housing & Communities Corporation (SH Corporation); Lee Rae-hyeong, director of the Housing Project Office of Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH Corporation); as well as Im Hui-ji, researcher at the The Seoul Institute; and Kim Seung-bae, CEO of Fides Development as consultants.

The Formulation of an Urban Management Plan for the Revitalization of the Functions of Areas Near Subway Stations is a project intended to reestablish the functions of major areas near subway stations in Gangdong-gu through the examination of their situations, and with that information, a populated, complex smart city development plan (draft), which pays consideration to population growth, will be devised.

Currently, the economy of Gangdong-gu is in the process of radical transformations. Large-scale development projects, such as the extension of subway lines 5, 8, and 9, the construction of the Seoul-Sejong Highway, the establishment of Godeok Biz Valley (comprehensive commercial complex) and Gangdong Industrial Complex, and housing project construction and renovations are all under way. Plus, as new building projects are being pursued in the nearby cities of Guri, Namyangju, and Hanam, Gangdong-gu has the opportunity to become the future residential center for 2.2 million people in the eastern parts of Seoul.

This project was implemented in order to balance local development, promoting large-scale growth throughout Gangdong-gu without being overly concentrated in certain areas. The collaboration between the SH Corporation and LH Corporation will help ensure the plans’ feasibility and actualize individual projects.

From now on, together with the two aforementioned corporations, Gangdong-gu will ▲ prepare a set of guidelines (draft) for the development of densely populated, complexes ▲ determine the target areas for the and select the priority area ▲ examine a customized commercialization plan, and ▲ analyze the economic value of the plan and prepare an architectural blueprint (draft).

The mayor of Gangdong-gu, Lee Jung-hun stated, “The areas around subway stations in Gangdong-gu are currently less populated than those of other districts, and are expected to become more densely populated through this project, making Gangdong-gu more compact. We will actively collaborate with local residents and public companies to realize sensible smart development of the city around the 17 subway areas.”
