On March 18, Gangdong-gu (Mayor, Lee Jung-hun) hosted a ceremony to launch the “2019 Senior Citizen Employment and Social Activity Support Project” in the auditorium on the 5th floor of the Gangdong-gu Office, marking the beginning of the project with the participation of 3,150 elderly residents.

This year's senior job project will run 45 programs, including elderly care by elderly volunteers, woodwork, cafe operation, urban vegetable garden cultivation, edible insect farming, and insect facility operation with a budget of KRW 9 billion, which is the largest ever, attracting 16% more participants than the previous year. A total of 3,150 senior citizens will be assigned to various fields, including volunteering at public or welfare facilities, who will work until the end of the year.

170 participating senior citizens and head of business-related organizations attended the launch ceremony to celebrate the beginning of the senior citizens’ “second lives.” Opening with the performances of a volunteer group composed of retirees, the ceremony’s highlight was the pledges made by representatives from each participating facility, promising their commitment to the efficient operation of the project and to the promotion of positive views of employment in the local community.

The ceremony was followed by basic education and training on the prevention of various accidents to help the participating senior citizens quickly adapt to their new work and have confidence in social activities.

Mayor of Gandong-gu, Lee Jung-hun stated, “With the rapid aging of the elderly population in Korea, there has not been many jobs available for senior citizens. Gangdong-gu will actively help senior citizens lead lively and comfortable lives by providing them with jobs tailed to meet their needs.”
