Gangdong-gu improves walking environment for side streets of Amsa Road for residents’ safety$- Pedestrian-friendly environment created with priority street for pedestrians and the concept of‘Gangdong’s four-season’-- Vehicle speed restricted, traffic safety facilities installed, and coated-film packaging paved

21-11-2018

Gangdong-gu, headed by Mayor Lee Jung-hun, announced that it would create the sides street of Amsa-gil in Amsa-dong (Olympic-ro 98 gil - Godeok-ro 28 gil) as the priority street for pedestrians to help reinforce residents’ walking safety.

Creating the priority street for pedestrians is a project to prevent possible traffic accidents on side streets where there are no divisions between sidewalks and vehicle roads and to enhance pedestrians’ safety and convenience.

Amsa-gil refers to side streets linking Amsa 1(il)-dong in east-west direction, having a width of 8 to 10 meters and extending about 850 meters and is vulnerable to traffic accidents because of a high volume of vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

The Office has been promoting the project since last year to prevent accidents and strengthen residents’ walking safety. With the concept of ‘Gangdong’s four seasons,’ a pedestrian-friendly environment has been created by producing walking designs based on themes of spring, summer, fall, and winter for each section, while vehicles’ travel speed on the entire route of Amsa-gil being restricted below 30 km per hour. Also, traffic safety facilities such as road marks and traffic signs have been installed throughout.

Mayor Lee Jung-hun expressed his hope that “the project will provide residents with a safer and more pleasant walking environment and help promote nearby commercial areas.”

Furthermore, Gangdong-gu Office is striving to ensure pedestrians’ safety, including the creation of the priority street for Cheonjung-ro 12-gil near Cheonho Park and safe walking special roads near Hansan Elementary School as well as improvements of protected areas for children and senior citizens.
