Gangdong-gu announced that it had installed yellow carpets in commuter lanes near Myogok, Gangsol, Hansan and Myeongdeok Elementary Schools to ensure children’s safety.

A yellow carpet is a safe zone for pedestrians devised by the International Child Rights Center. It is intended to encourage children to wait for traffic signal safely and help drivers recognize children easily by marking the waiting space in the crosswalk with yellow color to distinguish the safe island.

This time yellow carpets were installed in four places near Myeongdeok, Hansan, Myogok and Gangsol Elementary Schools. The yellow carpet near Hansan Elementary School is quite significant in that it could protect children and other people from possible accidents in areas where traffic congestions are serious because of the nearby housing reconstruction work.

The Office has been installing yellow carpets since 2016, with the number of children’s safe islands increasing to 10 including in Seongil and Godeok Elementary Schools, and plans to actively seek more yellow carpet targets in the future.

“Nearly 44% of accidents involving children’s deaths are caused by traffic mishaps and 81% of them are related to crosswalk accidents,” said Mayor Lee Jung-hun, adding that “we will create an environment where children can commute and walk safely by expanding yellow carpets that can not only help prevent children’s traffic accidents but also alert children to safety.”

Apart from yellow carpets, Gangdong-gu Office is eager to ensure children’s traffic safety along commuter lanes by improving the school zone, installing the solar speed warning signal system, and repairing crash barriers for pedestrians.
