Gangdong-gu, headed by Mayor Lee Jung-hun, revealed plans to supply over 100 elders of vulnerable social groups with reduced mobility with adult walkers.

There are 58,184 elders residing in Gangdong-gu, making up 13.5% of the total population. Around Six thousand of the residing elders have been determined to be at the grade eligible to receive Long Term Care Insurance due to senile sicknesses, etc., and currently receive adult walker support through home-visit care, facility use and welfare kit allowances.

On the other hand, elders with reduced mobility but who are not judged to be of the grade eligible for Long Term Care Insurance can only receive the home-visit care benefits of the senior care combined services, you could say they are in a welfare blind spot.

Gangdong-gu established the 「Ordinance of adult walkers for elders in Gangdong-gu, Seoul」 in February to create a legal system that would provide adult walkers to elders with reduced mobility but who do not receive welfare kit benefits from Long Term Care Insurance.

This will be the first time that the ordinance will be implemented after its enactment, and the ordinance will benefit basic livelihood security recipients who have received Long Term Care Insurance Non-graded A or B classifications. Registration for the adult walker support will be available at the community center of one’s neighborhood of residence until November 2.

Mayor Lee Jung-hun commented, “There are about 260 elders with reduced mobility in Gangdong-gu who are classified as non-graded. It is our hope that the adult walker support will help, at least a little bit, elders of vulnerable social groups who have trouble getting around but do not receive welfare kit support to enjoy vibrant lives.”
