Gangdong-gu, headed by Mayor Lee Jung-hun, became the first to expand and reorganize the national local government to establish the Gangdong-gu Construction Safety Center, an organization exclusively in charge of the safety field, and held the signboard hanging ceremony on September 10.

The center was established to prevent accidents similar to the recent Sangdo-dong Daycare Center collapse and the Jecheon Sports Center fire in 2017, in addition to earthquakes, fires, construction site accidents of private buildings, and more. A professional team comprised of individuals with expert knowledge in the safety and technical field of construction will be dispatched, with one center head, two mandatory professionals, one team manager, and one employee responsible for a total of five members in accordance with the Building Act.

A district RA manager conducted the construction site safety inspection during the first half of this year, and it was revealed that a professional system was unsatisfactory with insufficient results for medium and large buildings, facilities were vulnerable to disasters, unsatisfactory preparation for the monsoon season and scorching summer heat, and lack of manpower.

To offer speedy responses and overall safety management services regarding the safety management of the private building, the Gangdong-gu Construction Society and members of the Gangdong-gu Construction Committee Rescue Technicians conferred to establish the first national Local Construction Safety Center.

Gangdong-gu plans to gradually hire construction structure technicians, serving as experts in the safety field, and architects to find a professional management system of safety functions for buildings and promote substantiality of technical inspections.

Mayor Lee Jung-hun expressed, “It brings me joy that the establishment of the Gangdong-gu Construction Safety Center will not only prevent disaster and accidents, but will also offer a customized safety service for residents that is customized to the conditions of each local community. This motivates us to strive even further to create a peaceful and safe Gangdong.”
