Gangdong-gu, headed by Mayor Lee Jung-hun, will pay an annual filial grant of KRW 200,000 to spread the beautiful and traditional inheritance of filial culture. Residents can apply from the September 10 to October 5 at the community center in their jurisdiction.

Applicants must have resided in Gangdong-gu for at least one year and live with parents, grandparents and other immediate family members who are over the age of 100.

Gangdong-gu will provide KRW 200,000 per household in October, the month of respect for elders, after confirming the actual circumstances. Announcements will be made through meetings for administration leaders and professional groups so that no one is left out.

Mayor Lee Jung-hun stated, “The filial grant is the act of showing gratitude for households supporting elder parents and for instilling pride in those practicing their filial duties. We hope to continue in the promotion of this city culture by developing and advocating filial-based policies for all residents to reflect on the importance of family.”

In addition to offering a practical incentive for filial acts, Gangdong-gu is taking the lead in many ways to promote the filial culture. Public and private groups collaborated in 2012 to hold the birthday party for elders over the age of 100 at the Whole World Banquet, while the district commended those practicing filial acts by going public with cases of excellence in performing such action, in addition to the promotion of educational projects to further propagate the filial culture.
