Gangdong-gu, headed by Mayor Lee Jung-hun, will operate the Bioenergy Farm Workshop (132, Amsa-dong, Gangdong-gu) starting on September 5 to promote the interest in alternative green energy and highlight the intrinsic value of the environment targeting elementary school students.

The farm workshop will be in operation during the flowering time of sunflowers, the energy source of biodiesel, and will offer a special hands-on program aimed at primary school children, in addition to providing a workshop on bioenergy production.

Children will use sunflower seeds to personally make biodiesel, a green energy fuel made from rapeseed, beans, and vegetable oil. They will also learn about climate change and global warming, boil eggs with a solar-powered cooker, make cotton candy with a self-powered bicycle, assemble and operate a solar-powered windmill, along with getting some hands-on experience other uses of new and renewable energy.

The animal breeding farm installed within the farming facilities also allow for children to connect with animals and naturally learn about biomass, an energy source of bioenergy using organic matter that can be incorporated as chemical energy.

An official remarked, “We will offer various experiences for children to learn about green bioenergy, the conservation of energy and what it takes to create a sustainable green city.”
