Gangdong-gu, headed by Mayor Lee Jung-hun, will operate the Fall Women’s Career Program until December to assist mothers in returning to their careers following marriage, pregnancy, birth and child-rearing, in order to strengthen their capacity for employment. Participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

According to Statistics Korea, over 46% of married women experienced interruptions in their careers in last year alone. Many women seek employment, yet face difficulties in returning to their careers following marriage, birth, and child-rearing.

Gangdong-gu has operated the program since 2006 in order to alleviate this issue. Presently, there are instructors in fields affiliated with current trends to enable students to receive assistance in practical employment by acquiring the relevant licensing.

The fall program features a total of 11 programs, including coffee brewery, health management for mothers and newborns, babysitting, and more, with two new classes that include career counseling and creative puzzle & board game instruction. Each program period is 3-4 months accommodating a total 270 students.

Coffee brewery, the most popular program, helps students achieve barista licenses through continuous practice and training with brewing coffee, latte art, differentiation, and roasting. Health management for mothers and newborns had the most students last year and is a course that cultivates professionals in the health care of mothers who have become physically weak as a result of pregnancy and childbirth. The Babysitting program, currently in demand with the growing number of dual-income families, goes beyond simply child-rearing into the addressing of the basic education to foster children’s proper character.

There is also the Organization specialist program that offers consultation in organization and storage of all household and office spaces, in addition to the Korean food cooking certification program that prepares students for the practical examination through practice in the cooking of Korean food.

Mayor Lee Jung-hun expressed, “We will continue to develop and support high-level education courses for women who have remained distant from economic activity due to childbirth and child-rearing to help them get their careers back on track.”

All female residents of Gangdong-gu can apply for the Women’s Career Program and applications can be completed and submitted by visiting the Gangdong Community Center or via the Gangdong-gu City Management Corporation website (online.igangdong.or.kr).
