Gangdong-gu (Mayor: Lee Hae-sik) was awarded the grand prize of the private sector category at the “13th Korea Environmental Awards” on the 3rd at the Yeouido Korea Federation of SMEs Grand Ball Room and accomplished an inspiring deed in being awarded eight consecutive years since 2011.

Following its establishment in 2006, the ‘Korea Environmental Awards,’ which celebrates its 13th awards this year, is a representative awards event in the environment field that is sponsored by the Korea Environmental Awards Committee and supported by the Ministry of Environment; Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs; Ministry of Education; Ministry of Science and ICT; Ministry of the Interior and Safety; Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy; and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Gangdong-gu was awarded eight consecutive years since 2011 and was acknowledge once again for its efforts and outcomes in the realm of urban agricultural policies for sustainable urban growth.

Gangdong-gu promoted urban agricultural policies from 2008, a time when the concept of urban agriculture itself was unfamiliar to the public. With the start of environment-friendly school meals to the creation of city vegetable gardens, the environment-friendly farm produce direct sales store SingSing-Dream, an urban agriculture support center, an urban agriculture park and a native seed library, the district operated various education programs to heighten citizen awareness of urban agriculture.

Furthermore, Gangdong-gu enacted the country’s first “Ordinance for the Support and Revitalization of Environment-friendly Urban Agriculture” in 2010 and influenced the enactment of the “Act on Development and Support of Urban Agriculture” and the “Seoul Ordinance on Development and Support of Urban Agriculture.”

Gangdong-gu will co-host the ‘Urban Agriculture Expo’ with the city of Seoul beginning May 17 for four days at the Iljasan Nature Park and will organize a public meal center, Farmix Center and an insectarium to promote a private network to show the possibility for growth as a future industry of the pluralistic value of urban agriculture.

Mayor Lee Hae-sik stated, “Urban agriculture reduces the discharge of carbon while being an environment-friendly policy that responds to the changing climate. It is also communal vitalization, stabilization of identity and a healthy urban business that complements the harsh lives of the citizens. Urban agriculture encompasses many significant factors and Gangdong-gu will take the lead in helping this grow into a future industry.”
