Gangdong-gu (Mayor: Lee Hae-sik) will make improvements to the atmospheric environment in response to the intensifying fine dust and will operate a waterfall, stream, ground fountain and other roadside waterscape facilities from May 1 to offer citizens a resting space in the city.

 There are currently twenty waterscape facilities in and around roadsides, green zones and parks to improve the air quality, reduce city heat islands and offer citizens resting spaces.

 The roadside waterscape facility to begin operation in May will include a total of nine facilities that include Dunchon Waterfalls, Gangdong-gu Office Station Traffic Island, a ground fountain in front of E-Mart, Symbolic Street Park, Gangdong-daero, Gangil District, 88 Forest Belt, Sangil-dong Water Circulation Street and Hanyoung High School.

 During the hottest months in July and August, the city will operate an additional ten waterscape facilities within Cheonil Park, Iljasan Waterfalls and parks together with Godeokcheon Pool.

 Waterscape facilities at Symbolic Street Park, the ground fountain in front of E-Mart and the park will be operated at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. for a duration of forty minutes each and the roadside waterscape facility will be operated at noon and 2 p.m. for ninety minutes each. Godeokcheon Pool will be open from noon to 6 p.m. with thirty-minute break times at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. However, operation will be temporarily suspended in the case of rainfall or peak hours with high supply and demand of energy in the latter half of the year.

 According to the operation of waterscape facilities used as citizen water pools, Gangdong-gu plans to improve the surrounding environments, enforce regular inspections of water quality twice a month, change city water in water tanks once a week (three times a week in July and August) and fortify water quality for thorough sanitation and safe control of waterscape facilities.

 Gangdong-gu will run a thorough safety system so that in the case of incongruous results of the water quality inspection, Gangdong-gu will promptly examine the source and take the necessary measures to resolve the problem, and in the case that the quantity of colon bacillus exceeds the standard number, operation of the facility will be halted for reinspection and for further determination of whether or not the facility is to reopen for operation.

 An official of Gangdong-gu stated, “We will do our best to maintain the sanitation and safety control of waterscape facilities so that children and all citizens can feel refreshed and cool off by visiting the fountain.”
