Gangdong-gu to Operate Neighborhood Children's Board Festival Every Saturday$-Policy proposed by an elementary school student, actualized into a 2018 youth participatory budget project-Presents healthy leisure time and memories through board games played with friends, families and neighbors

Gangdong-gu (Mayor: Lee Hae-sik) will operate a ‘Neighborhood Children’s Board Festival’ every Saturday beginning April 7 targeted at elementary and middle school students to support healthy communication and play culture among friends, families and neighbors.

This program is the actualization of a policy that was proposed by an elementary school student in June 2017. The student shared the idea of wanting to spend more enjoyable time with friends and family with ‘board games,’ through which youth, who are accustomed to spending time on smartphones or on the Internet, could instead sit around a paper or wooden board and have fun.

After evaluation by the appropriate division of the district and through careful deliberation of the Gangdong-gu Youth Council, the proposal was selected for the Gangdong-gu youth participatory budget project and enforced in April.

The senior citizen center located in Myeongil 2(i)-dong willingly offered the second floor space to the youth, and the youth café ‘Ttongkko Attic,’ a board game enterprise, will be in charge of the space.

This program will run every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. The program will be divided into the first and second halves of the year, and the first half will run from April 7 to June 30 while the second half will run from September 8 to November 24. The program will not be in operation during the severely hot months of July and August.

There will be a youth board game gathering (3 sessions) and a family board game party (1 session) each month, and there will be an Our Neighborhood Board Game Festival every half year.

Participants will be accepted through the Naver Band Youth Board Festival website (band.us/@gangdongi) between every Monday at 9 a.m. to Tuesday 6 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.

Mayor Lee Hae-sik commented, “As a children-friendly city, this is a very important program that delivers the voices of children and youth in the local community district,” and “this is a small step we took but we consider this an opportunity for communication among the local community and will actively support this program to create a warm community.”

For inquiries, contact the Gangdong-gu Office Senior & Youth Welfare Division’s Children’s Policy Team (☎02-3425-5777) or the youth café Ttongkko Attic (☎02-426-1917).
