Gangdong-gu (Mayor: Lee Hae-sik) and its new ‘Lifetime Education Center for Persons with Developmental Disabilities’ will hold an opening ceremony on the 30th. The center will provide lifetime learning opportunities and offer support for independent living to adults with developmental disabilities who have graduated from special-education schools, but have no place to go.

The district leased and remodeled the third floor of a building near Cheonho Park in October 2017 for establishment of the center, with a total floor space of 642.32㎡. The center is composed of five classrooms, a counseling center, cafeteria, and auditorium, as well as a Snoezelen room for mental stability.

A total of twelve social workers, special instructors, and holders of professional licenses were hired for professional education. Thirty students were registered in February, and the first class was held on March 12.

The course of study is organized into two years of basic courses and two years of advanced courses, with five regular classes, five days a week (six students in each class with a total of thirty students). Application for extended classes for one year is available, and students can receive up to five years of education. The monthly fee for regular classes is 270,000 won (which includes the cost of lunch).

The center will offer customized education programs including △ daily life and independent living △ social adjustment △ communication △ health care △ vocational training.

Mayor Lee Hae-sik stated, “Taking a step further than just protecting persons with developmental disabilities, it is important that we expand opportunities for them to take part in society as members of the local community,” and “we will strive to create a local community in which persons with developmental disabilities and their families are not isolated but live together in our community.”

Gangdong-gu received the special prize and was acknowledged for its success in maintaining its identity through the prehistoric festival and for the excellency of its diverse and original programs.
