Gangdong-gu (Mayor: Lee Hae-sik) to operate <2018 Visiting Animal School> targeting third grade elementary school students in the district from upcoming April to November. Applicants for class participation to be received on first come, first served basis until March 23.

Based on proper understanding of the ‘five freedoms for animals,’ ‘basic principles for animal welfare’ and others, the <Visiting Animal School> has been operating the animal welfare early education to foster a coexistence consciousness with animals. Targeting third grade elementary school students, a speaker from Korea Animal Rights Advocates (KARA) will teach classes in local classrooms.

Last year, 2,045 students from fifteen elementary schools in the district participated in the Animal School, and over 4,000 children have participated in the <Visiting Animal School> program.

With a rising number in schools hoping to participate in this program, the number of participating students doubled this year to 4,075 with applications received on a first come, first served basis without limit to the number of classes per school.

Each class is about two hours of collaborative instruction focused on a child’s perspective, with yes/no quizzes, board games, videos, Bird Saver (bird collision prevention sticker) making, among other program activities, for children to fully sympathize with and discover a healthy interest in animals.

An official of Gangdong-gu commented, “The <Visiting Animal School> develops life sensitivity in our children and is an opportunity for the children to foster responsibility and coexistence consciousness with more fragile beings,” and “we hope that this will establish a healthy companionship culture and help prevent pet abandonment.”
