Gangdong-gu (Mayor: Lee Hae-sik) has been selected as a “Special Social Economic District” in Seoul for two consecutive years, through the “Creation of Youth Centered Leather Fashion Industry Collaboration” project and has secured municipal expenses of 200 million won.

The “Special Social Economic District” is a model for local development of socially economic methods that resolve local problems through cooperation with local communities. Gangdong-gu has been selected as a “Special Social Economic District” for two consecutive years with its plans to create youth employment opportunities and improve sustainable local specialized industries through the “Creation of Youth Centered Leather Fashion Industry Collaboration” project.

In the past year, Gangdong-gu promoted various projects including ▲ opening of the local leather network space ‘Seoul Leather Fashion Business Support Center (2F, 53, Godeok-ro, Gangdong-gu)’, ▲ ‘operation of the Ministry of Employment and Labor Leather Fashion Collaboration Entrepreneurship Education’ (foundational and advanced courses) for nurturing talented individuals, ▲ construction of the special district online platform ‘L-AND,’ ▲signing of a business agreement with Hyundai Department Store – Cheonho Branch for new market opening, ▲ signing of business agreement for joint youth entrepreneurship funding with Industrial Bank of Korea and the Seoul Credit Guarantee Foundation, and ▲ ‘selection of occupying businesses of the Seoul Leather Fashion Business Support Center’ for youth enterprises to a create multifaceted support systems.

 In 2018, its second consecutive year, Gangdong-gu plans to firmly solidify the foundation for special district projects through ▲ creation of the ‘Seoul Leather Fashion Business Support Center’ as the center of the leather fashion industry, a center supporting youth business , while executing leather fashion youth business education, ▲ youth entrepreneurship support, ▲development support of ‘MADE BY SEOUL,’ the social economic special district brand (① operation of bank for leather fabric, related equipment, joint purchase proxy of subsidiary materials and materials, ② joint production of samples and publicity materials, ③ participation in domestic and foreign leather fashion expositions as well as participation in overseas conventions). 

Furthermore, in January, the youth-centered Gangdong-gu production cooperative ‘Seoul Leather Boy Scout’ and ‘SangSangMaRu’ provided support of artwork exhibition and sales at Gangdong Art Center and Korean Cultural Center, Beijing, China.

An official of Gangdong-gu stated, “Having been selected a special district for two years in a row, the ‘Creation of Youth Centered Leather Fashion Industry Collaboration’ project to connect youths interested in leather, with over 200 local leather fashion infrastructures, was set on its way. This year, we sped up with the establishment of a market and development of a joint brand with the core special district project, the youth entrepreneurship support business.”

Mayor Lee Hae-sik also stated, “We will create a local leather fashion industry with a dream and a future through collaboration with the local community as a special social economic district.”
