 The representative “Prehistoric Culture Festival” of Gangdong-gu (Mayor: Lee Hae-sik), was awarded the 『Special Prize in the Festival Program Category of the 6th Korea Festival Contents Awards Festival Program』 at The-K Hotel Seoul Convention Center on the 27th.

 The “Korea Festival Contents Awards,” which celebrates its 6th anniversary this year, is sponsored by the Korean Festival Contents Association and managed by the Korea Festival Contents Awards Promotion Committee and the Korea Festival Contents Association. It is a meritorious awards ceremony that is officially sponsored by Seoul and the Korea Tourism Organization.

 The association contributes largely to the growth of local economies and the tourism industry, and it gives awards to local festivals in eight categories: festival contents, festival tourism, festival economy, festival arts · traditions, festival global masterpieces, festival program excellence, Asia festival popularity, and festival program production.

 This year, Gangdong-gu’s representative “Prehistoric Culture Festival” was awarded the “Special Prize in the Festival Program Category of the 6th Korea Festival Contents Awards Festival Program.”    

 The “Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival” began in 1996 as a way to inform citizens of the historical value and significance of the Prehistoric Settlement Site, “Archaeological Site in Amsa-dong, Seoul,” and celebrates its 23rd anniversary this year. As the original and only festival in Seoul under the theme of prehistoric times and with distinct historicity and identity, it was attended by over 400,000 spectators last year alone, and extended its reach outside of Gangdong-gu to become one of Seoul’s representative festivals.

 In the street parade, which can be seen as the heart of the festival, over 1,500 citizens dress up like primitive inhabitants and parade down a 1.8 km section of road from Cheonil Middle School to the site of the Amsa-dong ruins. In addition to this, the festival provides spectators with attractions and other things to do, with over 80 programs in six categories, including prehistoric hope lamp lighting, a primitive barbecue experience, a Bawijeol village performance for the dead, a spacing out tournament, and other programs that connect prehistoric times with the present.

 Gangdong-gu received the special prize and was acknowledged for its success in maintaining its identity through the prehistoric festival and for the excellency of its diverse and original programs.

 Mayor Lee Hae-sik stated, “Gangdong-gu received the special prize and was acknowledged for its success in maintaining its identity through the prehistoric festival and for the excellency of its diverse and original programs. We will steadily continue to grow so that the Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival can become a national festival where spectators can enjoy the history and culture of the prehistoric age.”
