Gangdong-gu (Mayor: Lee Hae-sik) operates a year-round non-smoking clinic targeted at smokers who are hoping to quit smoking.

 Anyone who registers at the non-smoking clinic will receive a carbon monoxide measurement exam and a nicotine dependency exam in order to grasp each individual’s personal condition. Following this, they will consult with a professional counselor to formulate a customized plan to quit smoking.

 Individuals will be given six months of regular consultation and management, together with nicotine supplements and supplementary goods that are effective at easing withdrawal symptoms and urges to smoke, in order to help with quitting smoking. Individuals who succeed in quitting smoking for more than six months are given small gifts.

 According to Gangdong-gu, 3,285 smokers registered at the non-smoking clinic in the past year, and over 33.9% of the registrants succeeded in quitting smoking for over six months.

 This year, for residents who hope to quit smoking, the non-smoking clinic will operate a “nighttime clinic,” “Saturday clinic,” “moving clinic” and “Saturday youth clinic” targeted at youths, which can be used at their convenience.

 The “nighttime clinic,” which is specifically for workers who cannot visit the health center during the day on weekdays, will be open through a reservation system every Wednesday until 8 p.m. The “Saturday clinic” will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every second and fourth Saturday. The “Saturday youth clinic,” which is targeted at youths who smoke, plans to promote youth health through consultations on quitting smoking and education on controlling smoking urges.
