Gangdong-gu (Mayor: Lee Hae-sik) revealed plans for the operation of “Our Neighborhood Social Economy Activists,” which publicizes and connects businesses related to the general social economy, by visiting several locations in the region between November of last year and this July.

 The “social economy” field is presented through various media, but the concept is still foreign to ordinary citizens. Hence, Gangdong-gu operates “Our Neighborhood Social Economy Activists (hereinafter Activists)” that increases citizens’ awareness and provide plans for local residents to substantially form a link between their lives and the social economy.

 Currently, there are seven active members serving as Activists, and they investigate local resources and visit advanced case enterprises, publicize and give consultations on the social economy regarding in-house enterprises and small businesses, and act as social economy coordinators for the revitalization of the social economy.

 Activists examine plans for the establishment of cooperation targeted at local grocery stores and cafes, and also identify and link personal and material resources, such as small libraries and communal spaces, so that local residents can step forward and make substantial contributions to social economy activities.

 In order to accomplish this, Activists strengthen their professionalism through Gangdong-gu’s social economy education programs while visiting locations throughout the region to obtain information about regional conditions and resources. In addition, Activists match the social economy business with local businesses in Gangdong-gu and deliver news regarding the social economy to residents.

 An official of Gangdong-gu commented, “We hope that ‘Our Neighborhood Social Economy Activists’ will help residents to easily understand the social economy and step forward as subjects of the social economy.”
