Gangdong 'One Family Garden per Household' Global Environmental Awards $ Wins Silver Award in '2017 Green World Awards' ... following last year's Green Apple Awards

The eco-friendly urban agriculture ‘2020 One Family Garden per Household' project, which Gangdong-gu has consistently been focusing on, has become recognized globally.

On the 13th, Gangdong-gu revealed, "On the 11th, we had the honor of receiving the Silver Award at the '2017 Green World Awards' ceremony held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE)." This was their second splendid achievement after winning at the Green Apple Awards, one of the world's top 4 international environmental awards, last year.

The Green World Awards is selected from the winners of last year's Green Apple Awards and therefore, Gangdong-gu's urban agriculture can be seen as having become more widely acknowledged around the world.

The English nonprofit environmental organization, 'The Green Organization', which is globally recognized, organizes these types of events each year and awards excellent eco-friendly examples of all fields throughout the world for environmental achievement, technological innovation, and excellent products and services.

The district prioritized the ‘2020 One Family Garden per Household’ project and has been driving the invigoration of eco-friendly urban agriculture and pushing to realize a sustainable and ecological city. The district first gained interest in eco-friendly urban agriculture in 2009. Thereafter, they consistently made efforts and as a result, they currently have the largest scale of family gardens in Seoul at about 164,188㎡. In November 2010, the district also enacted the 'Eco-friendly Urban Agriculture Invigoration and Support Ordinance' for the first time in the nation.

Lee Hae-Sik, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, "Receiving the recognition from Green World Awards following the Green Apple Awards signifies global acclaim for Gangdong-gu's efforts and achievements of the eco-friendly urban agriculture it has been working on. We are very honored and pleased. Gangdong-gu will continue to make efforts to become a shining example for other cities to follow as a sustainable and ecological city."
