Gangdong-gu is garnering attention for its construction of a 'school zone pedestrian safety specialized street' near Soungnae Elementary School.

Cheonhoyet-gil and Seongnaero 3-gil near Soungnae Elementary School has implemented vehicle restrictions from 8am to 9am to ensure children have a safe commute to school. The district newly enhanced a 500m area of the street near the school using a pedestrian-friendly paving method with a design pattern, and added colored images to induce cars to slow down.

In addition, the district transformed this street into a friendly and harmonious avenue by placing design installations containing images and descriptions of flowers that bloom in each season in various areas of the school walls after reaching an agreement with the school.

A total of 100 million won in funds were used in the project. The district expects this project to prevent safety accidents of nearby pedestrians including the students of Soungnae Elementary School.

A Gangdong-gu official said "Creating a social system that protects children is more important than anything else. We will continue to seek locations that need improvement in the pedestrian environment and expand the safety network for the transportation vulnerable."

Gangdong-gu is also leading the creation of a safe pedestrian environment for children through the 'children protection zone improvement project', 'children protection zone solar LED sign replacement and CCTV installation project' and 'yellow carpet installation project'.
