37-Year-Old Gangdong-gu Office Annex is Reborn as an Energy-Efficient Building

15-09-2017

The Gangdong-gu Office Annex is a 37-year-old building constructed in 1979. The building originally housed the Gangdong Police Station and has now become a work and welfare facility of the city hall that conserves over 60% more energy compared to the past through strengthening of seismic reinforcement and insulation, installing solar power generation facilities and improving the energy efficiency rating from grade 4 to grade 1++, a 5-step improvement.

Implementing the green remodeling method to older public office buildings, which were relatively more difficult to improve compared to newer buildings, as an example, it is expected to contribute to energy conservation and reduction of greenhouse gases.

It transformed into an energy-efficient building through construction of exterior fireproof insulation, reduction of the window size in the north side of the building, installation of insulation windows, 42mm triple glass, heat ventilation devices, energy monitoring, energy storing devices, external window blinds and installation of solar power generation facilities on the outer walls and roof of the building.

The building is being evaluated as an exemplar public building remodeling construction project. In 2017, it was selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport 2017 『Public Building Green Remodeling Support Project』 in the Construction category and received 100 million won in construction funding.

The space which was used as the police station jail has now become an exhibition hall and cafe operated by disabled persons contributing to job creation for the disabled.

Departments that were renting private buildings due to the lack of government office space moved to the annex, reducing inconvenience for visitors and improving working conditions for employees.
