Gangdong-gu installed 11 shade sails near crosswalks throughout the district in preparation for the scorching heat this summer.

Gangdong-gu forecasted that this summer is likely to be extremely hot again following last summer and selected proper places such as crosswalks, crossroads, and traffic islands where there is a high floating population and where shade sails would not block the view of the pedestrians and drivers but offer nice shade.

Once the locations were selected, Gangdong-gu completed the installation of 11 shade sails in the district near Gangdong-gu Office, Gangdong Public Depot, Hanaro Mart Godeok Branch, Seoul Institute of Technology & Education, Amsa Station Intersection, Brownstone Cheonho, Hyundai Department Store Cheonho Branch, Cheonho Station Exit 2, Seongnae 3-dong model house, IBK Gil-dong Branch, and Home Plus Gangdong Branch.

Shade sails were greatly welcomed by the residents since they provide a place to avoid direct sunlight and prevent heat illnesses including heatstroke caused by prolonged sun exposure.

The shade sails are mostly 3.5 to 5m wide parasols that are made with special fabric suitable for UV ray protection and ventilation. They will be installed only in the summertime from June to September. Gangdong-gu insured the structure for possible safety accidents that the shade sails could cause and designated managers of these shade sails for daily maintenance. Furthermore, Gangdong-gu plans to immediately remove the shade sails in case there are forecasts of strong winds or heavy rain to prevent any accidents in advance.

A Gangdong-gu official said, “We are planning to install more shade sails by factoring in the opinions of the residents who are trying to fend off the scorching heat and strictly manage the safety of the shade sails”, and added, “We will do our utmost to help all residents to stay healthy and cool during the summer”.
