01-06-2017

In June, Gangdong-gu provides Amsa-dong Prehistoric Site Experience Classes to elementary students for one month.

With the support of the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Gangdong-gu has been excavating the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Site in Seoul since 2016.

It is the first excavation project at this site in 41 years and is attracting academic interest. Gangdong-gu decided to provide an educational program for children in order to promote the significance of the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Site.

Children from nine classes of five elementary schools including Daemyeong Elementary School will participate in Amsa-dong Prehistoric Site Experience Classes. Even though the excavation site is generally restricted, children can visit the site and experience excavations throughout the program.

They will explore the Neolithic settlement sites and remains and make a fire in the Neolithic manner. In commemoration of Neolithic jade accessories excavated from the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Site in 2016, children will make some jade accessories. Through this educational program, it will be an opportunity for them to vividly learn about the life experiences of the Neolithic era along with the experience of understanding the work of archaeologists. Researchers of the Institute of Cultural Properties of Hanyang University will help children during the program.

Gangdong-gu will conduct a variety of excavation projects and research efforts in cooperation with archaeologists in order to list the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Site as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition, it will keep providing relevant educational programs to citizens.
