Gangdong-gu conducts the Childhood Obesity Prevention Campaign to prevent childhood obesity and promote safe and healthy foods.

On Wednesday, May 24th, the Childhood Obesity Prevention Campaign was launched at Seoul Myogok Elementary School. About 60 people including second graders from the school, their parents, teachers, Gangdong Youth Support Committee members, and officials of Gangdong-gu attended the event.

Participating students resolved to practice the obesity prevention guidelines and marched through the streets. The obesity guidelines including ▲ Drink water instead of soda, ▲ Avoid fast food, ▲ Eat unsweetened snacks, ▲ Have a balanced diet, and ▲ Exercise.

On May 23rd and 24th, Gangdong-gu conducted inspections on food stands near the school, and distributed flyers containing how to identify high energy and low nutrition foods. Flyers were distributed to children, parents, school cafeterias, food stands, bakeries, stationery stores, and supermarkets providing snacks, beverages, ice cream, bread, tteokbokki, and deep-fried foods.

In addition, Gangdong-gu inspects if the neighborhood businesses use, have, display, or sell expired foods, products violating labeling standards, foods unsuitable for children, high energy/low nutrition foods, high-caffeinated foods, or foods not complying with hygienic standards.

Gangdong-gu will conduct inspections on a monthly basis in cooperation with private organizations. Minor issues will be corrected immediately and additional inspections will be conducted if necessary.

Foods deemed to be dangerous will be collected for testing and onsite inspections will be carried out to improve the cooking environment for food safety. Furthermore, Gangdong-gu will provide education so that children and business owners can identify high energy/low nutrition foods by themselves.

Through public-private joint inspections, it will improve the sanitary conditions and safety of food stands near schools. In addition, it is expected to relieve the anxiety of parents and to promote children’s health by protecting them from junk food.
