Reducing Fine Dust $ Reducing fine dust levels in cooperation with residents

24-04-2017

Gangdong-gu has been making various efforts to reduce the levels of fine dust including road cleaning, dust layers in construction sites, water spraying, and park construction. However, it decided to establish special countermeasures against the ever-increasing levels of fine dust.

Gangdong-gu found that fine dust rapidly increases due to dust emanating over from China and large-scale construction projects of Guri-si, Namyangju-si, and Hanam-si. In order to reduce the levels of fine dust, the Gangdong-gu has been conducting a crackdown on fine dust emissions in cooperation with its adjacent cities and prompted the Seoul Metropolitan Government to install more air pollution monitoring stations near the borders of the city. In addition, it requested a revision of the Clean Air Conservation Act so that the local governments concerned can take proper countermeasures together against fine dust generated from large-scale construction sites.

Fine dust comes from various sources including automobiles, construction sites, and roads. In order to reduce the levels of fine dust coming from a variety of sources, Gangdong-gu is encouraging the use of eco-friendly automobiles such as electric cars instead of diesel cars and used 10 million won to install 63 low-NOx household boilers for better energy efficiency and lower nitrogen oxide. In addition, Gangdong-gu has been conducting a crackdown on fine dust emissions at construction sites since January 2017. As a result, it has taken an administrative guidance on 83 businesses and an administrative action on 17 businesses including 14 remedial orders, 3 warnings, and imposition of 3.6 million won in fines. Gangdong-gu plans to establish stricter dust restriction criteria than the current legal regulations and has been cleaning the roads (water cleaning after dust removal) on dusty days.

Gangdong-gu advised residents to refrain from going out on dusty days and to wear a fine dust mask (KF80, 94, etc.) if they need to go out. In addition, it announced “10 Safety Rules to Protect Yourself from Fine Dust”.

Gangdong-gu has been making various efforts to reduce the levels of fine dust. Also, Gangdong-gu announced that it will form a Fine Dust Reduction TF Team, invite fine dust experts for a lecture, and collect practical ideas from residents.
