As the sun sets and sky darkens, a unique, exciting marketplace opens its doors in Gangdong-gu – Amsa Night Market.
The night market, which opens on Bandal-gil (790, Olympic-ro to 33, Olympic-ro 98gil) and passes through the Amsa Market, will open on October 7th, the first day of the Prehistoric Culture Festival of Gangdong, after trial operations on the upcoming 30th and 31st. It opens from 7pm to 11pm twice a week (Fridays and Saturdays) and, if public response is positive, has plans to be operated throughout the year starting from April of next year.
With the help of professionals from the private sector, Gangdong-gu conducted documentation review, interviews and food sampling shows this past August to finally select merchants to participate in the night market. About 20 of the specially produced display stands will sell not only a variety of delicious and unique food items such as yakisoba, Russian traditional cuisine and Swedish hotdogs but also accessories and props including optical fiber photo frames and jewelry. To prevent conflict between merchants who may sell identical or similar goods, the items sold in existing market stores have been excluded from display stands as much as possible.
Gangdong-gu will also set up small performance stages within the night market to host busking and semi-classic sessions that will be enjoyable for people of all ages who will visit the market. Through offering an abundance of things to eat, buy and see, the night market is ready to bring in many visitors and tourists as a leading cultural space in Gangdong-gu, rather than operating as a mere market.
Aside from this, it operates “Cheongchun Market”, a mall for youths to help launch their companies by utilizing underused spaces in the traditional market, and makes all efforts to transform the traditional market into a unique, energy-filled place.
