Garosu-gil in Sinsa-dong and Asem-gil in Samseong-dong. These road names that are familiar to us are honorary road names, not legal ones. In the midst of the increasing trend of establishing honorary road names, Gangdong-gu has also created one for itself.
Honorary road names are additionally assigned to the entire or a portion of roads with existing legal designations, which have been given according to the 「Road Name Address Act」 for the purpose of attraction of corporations or international exchanges. These special names are used along with their legal names for 5 years on road name address guide maps.
In early September, Gangdong-gu named the 340m-long section from 4 Cheonjung-ro to 32 Cheonjung-ro, where bicycle-related stores are densely located, as “Cheonho Bicycle Street”.
This particular area is home to about 20 commercial complexes constituted of bicycle-related stores, cafes and academies and, due to its proximity to Han River bike paths, many bikers often visit and pass through the area. Designation of this honorary road name, which was originally proposed by the owners of the bicycle stores and has passed a review by the district office, is expected to make significant contributions in fueling the bicycle-related industry and vitalizing the local economy.
In addition, nearby cafes and restaurants provide spaces to park bicycles and utilize bicycle goods and accessories in their interior designs, offering convenience and many things to see for visiting local residents.
On the other hand, “Jukkumi Alley” (98, Cheonhoyet-gil to 14, Cheonho-daero 158gil) has been also assigned with an honorary road name this past August after improving the signs of restaurants and installing a symbolic sculpture. “Jukkumi Alley” is home to 10 or so restaurants specialized in jukkumi, or webfoot octopus, that have been around since the 70s.
Currently, there are 6 honorary roads in Gangdong-gu, including “Munbangmuri-gil”, “Rodeo Street”, “Hanisarang-gil” and “Hanihuimang-gil”, all of which were designated in June 2010.
