Subject "Safety Guard for Children's Traffic Accidents" Project

Gangdong-gu, Seoul, is drawing attention by deploying dedicated personnel on the way to and from school with the aim of creating a safe school route, and carrying out safety guard projects in accidental areas. Gangdong-gu announced on the 10th that residents are highly responsive to various projects to prevent traffic accidents for children.

Gangdong-gu is the first to hire and operate personnel dedicated to children's traffic guidance directly from the public. The main commuting routes of 27 elementary schools during school hours are guarded by 199 green traffic safety guards. Since 2019, five schools have hired fixed-term workers to work from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and expanded them to all elementary schools last year.

In addition, Gangdong-gu started the "Safety Guard for Children's Traffic Accidents" project in September. 14 fixed-term workers have been publicly hired and placed on 14 way home from school since September. Walking guidance activities for children are conducted from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.

Based on data from the 2017-2020 Traffic Accident Analysis System (TAAS), an area to deploy safety guards was determined. The time and point of traffic accidents involving children's pedestrians within 300m around the elementary school were investigated to protect 14 areas where more than four accidents occurred. Next year, it plans to hire additional dedicated personnel and expand them to a total of 30 branches.

Lee Jung hun, mayor of Gangdong-gu District Office, said, "We are trying to share and solve parents' concerns through safety guard projects," adding, "We hope that children can work freely in a safe walking environment and will not stop developing policies for Gangdong, a walking-friendly city."
