Gangdong-Gu is opening Hekong Seniors Welfare Center this November, conducting an opening ceremony on the 1st. The Hekong Seniors Welfare Center of the Gangdong-Gu has been working as the only local welfare center for the elderly since 2011, taking the center role of senior welfare, Ever since members of the center increased and the building went through deterioration, the usage became uncomfortable. According to this, Gangdong-gu started the remodeling and completed the project of a 4-story building with enough facilitation.
The main goal of the construction was putting the focus on the "Seoul Cognitive Health Design" to help the seniors of the center raise their cognitive ability. After receiving official counseling by the "Cognitive Health Design Guideline", developed for an environment adaptive for dementia, "Social Communication Contents", "Physical Health Contents", "Mental Care Contents" was adopted as spatial goals. The main example of the construction is the "Beak-Sae Garden", which means a 100-years old garden. The seniors using the day-to-day care system can take a fresh walk without having to leave the center. The garden contains various plants to provoke the five senses and is able to enjoy with wheelchairs, too. It helps seniors improve their physical and mental health, like memory improvements. Mayor Lee-Jung Hun mentioned "The senior life quality is seen to rise with high-quality welfare service provided and the need of seniors fulfilled through this."
The center is not only for adults but is also expected to function as a local welfare culture system with the input of a local kindergarten, library, and a space for the local community.
