Subject Changing of the Dark Old City into a ‘Likeable Street’ Writes a Gangdong City Transformation Legend

"It's changing from a neighborhood leading nowhere to a street where dreams and hopes can be designed."

In an interview with Money Today on the 27th, Lee Jung-hun, head of Gangdong-gu District Office in Seoul, emphasized the Gangdong-type city regeneration project, "Likeable Street Project at Guchun-myeon."

Guchun-myeon-ro, the second round-trip road, crosses a low-rise residential area in Cheonho-dong, the oldest village in Gangdong-gu. Lee, who was elected in 2018, paid attention to the area. As old buildings were piled up in Guchun-myeon, which was not redeveloped, people stopped coming, and residents regretted old facilities and insufficient cultural facilities.

In response, Gangdong-gu invests a total of 41.1 billion won to carry out 43 projects in the Guchon-myeon-ro area (about 1km of Cheonho Elementary School intersection from Myeong-il Station on Subway Line 5). "We are making new things to enjoy, to taste, and to see which has diverse stories," said Lee, the head of the district office. "The ultimate goal is to make people visit Guchun-myeon again."

It improves poor health, welfare and cultural complexes compared to other regions. Theme spaces will be created in sections such as shared kitchens, living culture centers, workshops, and book cafe libraries. It will also remove telephone poles and refurbish the exterior of old buildings. "When the project is finished by June next year, it will be reborn as a bright and hopeful street where many young generations come," he said.
It is also of interest to the head of the district office Lee to come up with various measures to improve the quality of life in Gangdong-gu ahead of the 550,000 population. In order to secure facilities for close living infrastructure in small but essential areas, Gangdong-type welfare spaces are being expanded throughout the region.

Book cafe library "Dadok-dadok," infant and child community facilities "Child,Mom Gangdong," and children's self-governing center "KKoom-Miso" play a role in filling the small gap in culture and well-being. Lee said, "I had a lot of worries about narrowing the gap in the new city center." "We are working hard on space welfare based on the philosophy that people change and become happy when space changes."

In addition, Gangdong, a labor-friendly city, is also his representative value for Lunar New Year. Since the election of the head of the district in 2018, Lee has pledged to establish a labor-rights center as his first pledge. Gangdong-gu opened the nation's first labor-rights center directly operated by the autonomous region in June 2019. The Labor Rights Center has provided 16,899 people with labor rights education and 2,178 free legal counseling cases. He said, "It plays an important role in making people who work respected and not shed tears."

For the rest of his term, Lee is determined to do his best to achieve his goal of "Happy Gangdong." Lee stressed, "We will focus all our capabilities on creating a warm and happy community for all residents through balanced development between cities and regions where growth and distribution are virtuous."
