Subject Gangdong-gu conducts safety inspections on spires of religious facilities in preparation for storm and flood damage

Gangdong-gu(mayor Lee Jung hun) will conduct safety inspections on spires of 103 religious facilities in its jurisdiction in preparation for storm and flood damage. The spire is a structure vulnerable to strong winds because it is installed narrow and high on the rooftop floor of the buildings, and safety accidents on the spire continue every year due to poor management after installation. In response, Gangdong-gu conducted a factual survey on 338 churches in its jurisdiction since June to prepare for torrential rains and typhoons in summer, confirming that a total of 103 buildings have spires. From July 19th (Mon), a joint inspection team consisting of the Gangdong-gu Building Safety Center, architects and structural engineers will begin safety inspections of the spire. The spire, which needs more attention to the structure by carefully checking the basic condition, tilt, and damage on the connecting parts, will be asked for thorough safety management and Gangdong-gu office will guide owners and church officials repair and reinforcement matters. In addition, the government plans to subsidize some (4 million won per site) of the cost of demolition of spires whose management bodies are unclear due to negligence after relocating of spires and churches and which need urgent measures because of severe performance degradation due to demages and defects according to the inspection. "The spire of religious facilities was placed in a blind spot of safety management despite the high risk of evangelism caused by strong winds, This safety inspection and ironclad will enable accident prevention and systematic management", said Lee Jung hun, mayor of Gangdong-gu Office.
