Subject Gangdong-gu Obtained 'High Level Certification of Child-Friendly Cities'

Gangdong-gu, Seoul (District mayor Lee Jung hun) obtained a "high-level certification of child-friendly cities" from UNICEF on June 25.

According to Gangdong-gu on the 2nd, the upper level certification obtained by the district is a system in which UNICEF evaluates and certifies the child-friendly city projects of local governments that have been certified as child-friendly cities. The certification period is from 25 June 2021 to 24 June 2025, and is valid for four years from the date of certification.

Since it was certified as the 7th child-friendly city in March 2017, the district has implemented four basic rights of children (survival, protection, development, participation) and four basic principles (▷non-discrimination ▷ child best interest ▷ child opinion respect).

In addition, the Youth Council was formed through the 2016 Direct Election for the first time in the country. Since 2018, it has held the Youth Democracy Festival every year.

In particular, Gangdong-gu District has expanded various child-friendly public facilities to create an environment where children can enjoy play, culture and leisure, such as the Dream Smile of the Children's Self-Governing Center, which provides space for children after school.

Gangdong-gu's child-friendly city, which marks its second term with the recertification, will create a future-oriented and sustainable child-friendly city by pursuing five strategic goals, 16 core tasks and 175 children and youth projects with the vision of "Gangdong, where children are healthy, safe and happy." It plans to focus on coordinating and evaluating children's policies, revitalizing children's rights ombudsman, continuing to strengthen the network of related departments and related agencies, expanding opportunities for children's participation, and expanding facilities for children and adolescents.
