Subject Gucheon-myeon-ro, the old city center that has lost its visitors, transforms into the street you want to visit

“We will turn a dark neighborhood with nowhere to go into a bright street where dreams and hopes can be made.”

Gangdong-gu mayor Lee Jung-hun, who instilled the energy of change in Gangdong-gu, Seoul with various new policies for the 7th term of the popular election, selected the successful transformation of 'Gucheon-myeon-ro' as a task that he would like to achieve during the remainder of his tenure.

Gucheon-myeon-ro used to serve as the central road in Gangdong-gu for a long time in the past, but since a large apartment complex was redeveloped nearby, it became a dark street with faded store signs and old buildings on a narrow two-lane road. People scarcely visited this place, and the residents became tired of old facilities and insufficient cultural infrastructure.

The ‘Gucheon-myeon-ro Street Recreation Project’, which is also the focus of mayor Lee, is a representative Gangdong-type village regeneration project that transforms Gucheon-myeon-ro into a street where residents want to visit and stay. This year alone, 200 billion won will be invested in this project. It is significant in that there has never been a case of such a large-scale investment by a local government in a low-rise residential area, and that the public takes the initiative to “brand” the village by expanding cultural contents along with insufficient living infrastructure in the old downtown.

Six spaces including Yegam, Workshop, and Book Cafe Library ‘Da Dok Da Dok’ opened on the 21st of May, and cultural spaces are scheduled to open continuously. To create a safe pedestrian environment, underground poles and the replacement of old sidewalks will be carried out at the same time.

To the question “will the streets be able to change simply by the public creating physical spaces?”, Mayor Lee answered on the 25th of May that “in the end, it is most important to reflect the needs of the residents, and the infrastructure and cultural contents must also be highly complete.” He said, “If we make it into a street that residents want to live in, people will have no choice but to visit Gucheon-myeon-ro again.” He also added, “This project will not stop with the urban regeneration of Gucheon-myeon-ro, but will continue through Gucheon-myeon-ro to Godeok-ro and spread throughout Gangdong-gu. It will be a project that connects the contents and vitality of the village.”
