Subject Gangdong-gu leads generational sympathy from the middle-aged to the MZ generation

Gangdong-gu (Gu Mayor Lee Jung-hun) is leading the way in creating a horizontal organizational culture that can encompass the baby boomers generation to the MZ generation. Regularly arranging a time for communication between various generations and positions, and improving the culture of ‘time signal rice cake’ are representative examples.

Every Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., a message encouraging employees who worked hard for a week and music to soothe tired minds is broadcasted for 10 minutes at the district office. This is to provide time for employees who work in the same space but don't have much time to have conversations because they’re busy working.

When the broadcast comes out, employees get up for a while to stretch or chat with their co-workers in the department or the team. Broadcasting is meant to refresh the atmosphere and provide an opportunity for conversations, and employees who are busy handling complaints or pending issues do not necessarily have to participate.

Starting the first broadcast on April 14th, there have been 4 broadcasts so far, and the employees are very much satisfied. One employee said, “At 3:30 on Wednesday, I consciously give my support and encouragement to the team leader and members. The team leader, who used to be very surprised and embarrassed at first, now praises other employees too, and the overall atmosphere has become very good.”

This time for communication between various generations and positions runs for two months, from April to June. Afterwards, this program is planned to be expanded to the ward office and dong after checking the responses and participation of employees through a questionnaire.

Gangdong-gu is also operating and improving the culture to celebrate the appointment of new public officials. In March, they abolished the culture of ‘time signal rice cake’, which is a burden for new public officials, and now are creating a culture that supports and encourages future public service life by delivering greeting cards and cakes with sincerity from seniors and co-workers.

Lee Jung-hun, the director of Gangdong-gu, said, “Communication and integration between generations depend on how long they continue their efforts to understand each other. By accepting diverse opinions between generations and ranks on the organizational culture and the way of working, we will develop a good culture and improve an irrational culture to create a pleasant workplace in Gangdong-gu.”
