On March 27, 1919, the Gucheon-myeon, Dongbu-myeon, and Seobu-myeon, Gwangju-gun, adjacent to Seoul, were influenced by Seoul, raising beacon fires at night and holding independence demonstrations during the day. The demonstration began on the streets of Gucheon-myeon(It is now Gangdong-gu.). As many as 500 protesters went through Seongnae-ri Gokgyo-ri, Amsari, and Myeongil-ri. Around the evening, more than 1,000 people gathered in Sangil-ri, where the military police residence was located. Kim Kyung-bae(32 years old) of Sangil-ri stood at the forefront and shouted ‘Hurrah! The independence of Korea!’ The military police put a gun in Kim Kyung-bae's mouth and fired. Kim Kyung-bae was not killed, but was seriously injured. An Jong-hyeon of Gambuk-ri, Seobu-myeon(56 years old) and Choi Cheon-seong of Gam-ri(23 years old) died and two people were injured. Lee Dae-heon, head of Gyosan-ri(36 years old), Dongbu-myeon, Kim Kyo-young, head of Mangwol-ri(62 years old), Kim Hong-ryul, a farmer of Pungsan-ri(34 years old), and Koo Hee-seo, Gamil-ri, Seobu-myeon(47 years old), were arrested and jailed for a year or a year and a half.
