Subject Gandgong-gu Expands the Convenience Facilities for the Disadvantaged

Gangdong-gu, Seoul (Head of District Office Lee Jung-hun) is actively expanding convenience facilities in life such as ‘Happy Chairs Together’ in lifts and ‘Rental Wheelchairs’ to enhance the convenience of the people who have difficulty in walking.

The district has been receiving great response from residents by continuously extending convenience facilities for the disabled in real life, along with policies to promote convenience for the disabled using smart devices such as the Internet of Things (IoT) disabled parking management system, tablet PC video phone service, and a map of facilities for the disabled.

‘Happy Chairs Together’ newly installed this year are designed to allow people who are uncomfortable to walking to rest for a while in lifts in public buildings with a lot of residents’ use such as children's centers and community centers.
In particular, chairs installed in Gangdong Children's Center have been customized for the height of chairs for children to use.

In addition, the rental wheelchairs, which were placed free of charge at 17 community centers for residents who suffer from walking inconvenience due to disabilities, old age, and injuries, amount to 57 in total by adding 10 more wheelchairs in last February with a lot of use.

In addition, the district office plans a project to ‘lower the threshold of neighborhood stores, and to manufacture and support mobile ramps’ to provide small shops with mobile folding ramps that can be installed and folded conveniently so that residents using wheelchairs and strollers can easily access the shops.

"There are still many places around us that need changes for those who are uncomfortable in walking," said Lee Jung-hun, head of the district office. "We will continue to discover and promote small but realistic policy projects to create a 'disabled-friendly city of Gangdong.'
