Subject LED Signs on the Street, Local Forest in the Vacant Lot... Dark Old City Becomes Brighter

‘Gucheonmyeon-ro’ in Gangdong-gu has been an important road connecting Gyeonggi Province with Chungcheong and Gyeongsang Province since the Joseon Dynasty. However, in the 2000s, since many new apartments were built in Godeok-dong, Sangil-dong and Gangil-dong, the center of commerce and residence has moved. Now, faded signboards and old buildings in Gucheonmyeon-ro are showing the epitome of the old city. It is difficult for residents to take a walk because both driveway and sidewalk are narrow. Since 45% of single households in Gangdong-gu including many vulnerable residents such as the elderly are living in Gucheonmyeon-ro, the overall environment needed to be improved.

At the beginning of last year, the district recognized the problems of Gucheonmyeon-ro and organized the “Landscape Project Promotion Council” with 12 members including mayor Lee Jung-hun. Afterwards, “Plan for Creating a Street to Walk” based on the residents’ opinions, was started in August. It is a large-scale project with a budget of 41 billion won, and 43 small projects will be proceeded until June in 2022.

Some projects have already been completed to make the appearance of the city clean. First of all, 119 old signboards have been replaced with eco-friendly LED to enhance energy efficiency. The poor walking environment also has been improved starting with the sidewalk around the Gangdong-gu Lifelong Learning Center. The chin of the crosswalk was lowered for the disabled and the elderly, the protruded manholes were removed, and the old public telephone booths were replaced. The space next to the Lifelong Learning Center has been reborn as a local forest where the residents can take a rest. The concrete retaining wall was demolished and flowers and maple trees were planted, which made the local forest a place of meeting.

This year, the district is planning to expand health, welfare and cultural facilities in Gucheonmyeon-ro. Six facilities for cultural activities will be completed during this month. At Gucheonmyeon-ro 382, a brand shop that sells products of local enterprises will open. The shared kitchen in Gucheonmyeon-ro 373 will support young entrepreneurs related to food deliveries. A common space for arts will be installed at Gucheonmyeon-ro 371-1 where local artists can create and educate freely, and ‘Shared Makers Face (Gucheonmyeon-ro 355)’, which will help to commercialize small craft products, is also expected. The village library will open at Gucheonmyeon-ro 321, where you can read and also sell products related to books.

The district plans to improve the appearance of old building in June this year and install underground utility poles and streetlights in September. Also in September, a health, welfare and cultural complex will open at Gucheonmyeon-ro 297-5 with Cheonho Health Center, single household support center, fitness center and social enterprise innovation space. Smart benches and smart streetlights are planned to be installed in October this year. By November, the district is preparing to renovate the overall appearance of the alleys. When the projects are completed, it will become a successful case of the urban regeneration project which is established by the local government.

An official in Gangdong-gu said, “Ultimately, the goal of the project is to make Gucheonmyeon-ro a place where everyone wants to stay.” And said, “As it is a large-scale project in which 17 departments collaborate, we will do our best to complete it successfully.”
